Sheet piles are an earth (or liquid) retention system where steel sheets with interlocking edges to create a wall. The wall provides lateral support and can be temporary or permanent. Sheets are installed by either driving with an impact hammer, vibrating with a vibratory hammers or pushed statically with a hydraulic load system. Sheet piles can be used as cantilevered walls or tie-backs / anchors can be installed if cantilevering is not efficient. The interlocking system can greatly reduce groundwater flow into the excavation. Sheet piles can support excavations for a variety of below grade structures and can be particularly useful for marine construction such as seawalls and bulkheads. Piles for temporary walls can be rented and removed/returned upon completion of the facility.
